V.2010

The new Dentón 110 equals or improves the previous models range even though it is 8cm shorter between the muzzle and the handle. The inverted mechanism, repositioned sharkfins and gain from the muzzle give a superior band stretch than most other 110 guns with a gun length equivalent to a 102cm gun. This gun is designed for stalking and waiting for fish that require powerful long range shots, due to their behaviour or their size.

Given its good handling it is ideal for fish with quick reflexes like the grouper, dentex and other pelagic fish, being also useful in areas of murky water for more normal sized fish.

Wood and Varnish

The 3 guns are made from laminated Sipo or Util mahogany, a wood with ideal density, stability, humidity and stiffness. The original block is split to make the CNC cut consisting of 2 longitudinally cut strips for the lateral sections with the central section being composed of various pieces to give more stability to the barrel, minimising the risk warping in future. These are joined using an epoxy adhesive.

We give a 3 year guarantee against warping.

Prior to the cut, the gun is impregnated with an undercoat and 3 coats of epoxy resin applied with a rotary anti drip system which allows for a homogenous finish with enough thickness to stop surface scratches from reaching the wood.

Handling and bouyancy of the gun

Within a dense medium like water, it is the hydrodynamic resistance of an object is the main factor which affects its speed.

If we observe how a speargun is moved during a dive, we will see that 90% of the movements are made from side to side.

The new more sleeker design which decreases in thickness towards the muzzle, together with the close position of the two bands to the barrel, allows very good hydrodynamics for lateral movements, and offers an optimum vertical handling as the thickness of the two loaded bands is the same as the thickness of the barrel.

This combined with an 8cm shorter barrel than a standard 110cm gun provides much better handling than other guns of the same effective length.

The gun is neutrally buoyant at the muzzle and slightly positive at the handle, although thanks to the new ballasting system, the user can adjust this according to taste by adding or removing lead from the compartments at the muzzle or under the handle. The one at the muzzle is covered by a stainless plate with 2 screws whereas the one on the handle is covered by a rubber top also held in place with 2 screws.

Trigger Mechanism

The new inverted trigger mechanism designed in conjunction with Josetxo Errondosoro is one of the major modifications on the new models and it provides substantial improvements in the guns performance. The materials used are identical, but the position of the trigger lever and the shaft release has been inverted, the trigger lever is now in front and the shaft release behind, opposite to the standard mechanisms.

The length of the shaft release has been increased to reduce the effort required to shoot (lever effect) and will allow for a few more centimetres of band stretch.

Now with the same length of gun, we gain an extra 8cms of band stretch, which allows us to have a shorter gun with excellent handling and the same range as a gun which is 8cm longer.

The travel has been reduced slightly and so has the pressure required to make the shot, so it is a more sensitive trigger than the standard mechanism.

The auto-lubricating plastic trigger lever should last practically for ever.

Assembling this on the gun is also very simple as it is inserted from the top of the gun and comes with a line release lever that does not interfere with the trigger sensitivity upon tightening the shooting line.

Muzzle

The muzzle on the new guns is made with laser cut aisi304 stainless steel and this is then sandblasted to round of the sharp edges.

The vast majority of wooden guns have a very simple solution for the bands, one or various holes through the end of barrel. This weakens the wood and does not allow maximal use of the barrel for the band stretch. With this simple muzzle the band stretch has been increased a further 5cm without increasing the overall length of the gun, besides being a much sturdier solution against knocks etc. In this stainless piece are integrated the shaft blocking system and also the hole for the reel line and the tip to hold the second wrap of shooting line which is essential in a long range gun.

It also offers the advantage of being able to better position the bands: they lie very close to the shaft, parallel to each other with very little angle of traction. This allows for greater efficiency in the pulling faze of the bands and a hydrodynamic improvement of the gun during lateral movements.

Handle

The handle is one of the virtues of this gun. The position of the thumb gives a good grip capable of containing the recoil and avoids the rotation of the gun in the hand. Its ergonomic design has been adapted from Olympic shooting pistols, as well as the angle is forms with the barrel, giving it a large area of contact with the palm of the hand. It is joined to the barrel via a stainless steel screw and two slots in the stainless bracket which block its rotation and give it a solid union. This bracket also forms the trigger guard and stretches back to the loading butt to strengthen the unit. It is very simple to remove the handle, which eases transport and allows easy replacement in case it breaks.

The union between the handle and the barrel does not have any significant angle allowing very natural position of the hand and wrist and is aligned as much as possible to the guns the centre of mass to reduce muzzle lift increasing precision and avoiding shaft oscillations.

Under the handle is a compartment for lead which allows balancing of the gun and is covered with a rubber seal held in place with 2 stainless screws.

Combination bands -shaft

Thanks to the modification applied to the new 2010 version, we have managed to increase the pulling length of the bands, offering a more progressive release of energy which translates into smoother recoil, faster exit speed of the shaft and greater gun precision.

Before releasing the new gun we did controlled gun tests with different shaft and band combinations, and we opted for the option which provided the greatest speed, impact and least recoil.

The shaft used is adequate for the guns design, mass and power.

All the guns in the range now use 16mm bands with a 400% stretch, which allows the spear to be pushed for longer with less kilos, but applying more overall energy to the spear (Elastic Potential Energy).

The circular bands are tied with dyneema wishbones and stainless steel inserts tied with a constrictor knot. The eventually perishable dyneema bridle is simple and easy to replace without having to retie the bands, thanks to this system.

The Dentón 110 uses a 7,5x1300mm shaft with single flopper placed on the underside, with 3 micro sharkfins, a rest tab and 2 loading tabs in the extreme end of the shaft to stretch the bands as much as possible.

The butt of the spear is machined to allow use of up to 2mm shooting line although we recommend the use of 1.4mm line as the shaft speed decreases the thicker shooting line used. This machined section also hides the shooting line during the shot producing less drag.

Reel

The new reel has the same capacity as the previous models, around 90m of 1.5mm line. It is an open reel but has two rollers have been added which keep the line within the spool, without interfering in the reels drag. We continue to use an auto-open system which avoids us losing the gun if a fish gives a sharp tug on the line. For those spearos that still want to adjust the drag manually all the spearo would have to do would be to remove one of the o-rings in the reel.

The reel support bracket has also been modified and the previous axle welding has been removed to give greater strength to the unit. Now it is screwed into the stainless plate making it very solid.
